According to recent data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 2015 marked a record number of lip augmentation procedures in the U.S., making it the second fastest growing facial procedure in the last 15 years.
The number of lip enhancements jumped 5% last year, up 50% from the year 2000. In addition, about 1,200 male lip procedures were performed in 2015, a whopping 400% increase since 2000. All those numbers are a mouthful. And what they say is, “Give me some lip!”
Lip implants have gotten better and more popular
Dr. David H. Song, president ASPS, finds the growth in lip augmentation procedures quite striking, but maybe even more interesting is the fact that more than 27,000 lip implant procedures took place in 2015. That’s the equivalent of about one implant procedure every 20 minutes.
Lip implants aren’t exactly new
In fact, they’ve been around for quite a while. What’s changed and is likely driving the growth of the procedure is the technology that has greatly improved outcomes. Today’s implants are made of a soft, flexible silicone, and they’re more stable and pliable than previous implants.
It’s a fairly easy, two-step procedure
- Make two small incisions in the corners of the mouth
- Pull the implant into place
- Make two stitches
You should experience very little bruising, minimal swelling and a quick recovery.
Lip implants can be removed
This can provide an added level of comfort, because if you decide you don’t want you lip implants anymore, you can have them taken out.
There’s also been a steady rise in lip injections
Temporary lip augmentation can be a good option for people who want a non-surgical solution for enhancing the appearance of their lips. This procedure also allows patients to change easily change their minds because the effects of filler injections wear off in a few months.
