As we age, the buttocks, like most every other area of the body, begin to sag and droop. And turns out, putting a little of our own fat into the area can restore a more youthful shape. So it’s probably no surprise that more of us than ever are putting our plastic surgery goals behind us, so to speak.
The growth of gluteal augmentation
According to recent data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), butt implants and butt lifts are the fastest-growing plastic surgery procedures in the U.S. There are actually three methods for treating the butt area:
- Lift only
- Fat injection
But the fat injection procedure that has been named the “Brazilian Butt Lift” is the one that is growing most in popularity. The procedure can provide desirable results without complications that can be related to implants.
The Brazilian butt lift procedure includes liposuction to remove fat from another area of the body, such as the abdomen, hips or thighs. The removed fat is then processed and re-implanted into the buttocks via injection.
Some patients choose to have a lift procedure only, which can reduce the size of the region and improve its appearance by removing excess skin and fat. This surgery is most commonly performed on people who have lost a significant amount of weight.
The ASPS says that in 2015 the top “rear” procedures were…
Buttock augmentation with fat grafting
. Close to 15,000 procedures, up 28 percent from 2014
. About 4,800 procedures, up 36 percent from 2014
. More than 2,500 procedures, up 36 percent from 2014
Fat injections are considered permanent
About 60 to 70 percent of fat injected into the backside will remain, and the procedure will usually only need to be repeated once. If not performed correctly, however, buttock fat injections are virtually impossible to correct. Fat injected into that tissue is permanent and can’t be smoothed out after it’s placed.
